Set Friday has always been a tradition at Florida A&M University, including vendors, music, school spirit and a variety of fashion statements. Themes are given for each Set Friday to be interpreted by each student’s wardrobe. Students’ clothing choices reflect their moods, hairstyles and influences.

From “outfit of the day” trends to channeling one’s icons, fashion holds no limitations for creativity as seen on FAMU’s campus. Walking around the Will Packer Amphitheater is a fashion show in itself. As the fall semester begins, the set acts as a catwalk for students to “put it on.”

Ashanti Smith, an upcoming summer graduate, brings out the chicness of her outfit. She put her “fit” together with items from different department stores and wanted to highlight her physical features.

“I got this shirt from Ross. I knew I wanted to wear this denim skirt and to see what would fit my short haircut like what gave “rawr,” Smith said.

Cordell Jones, a junior, has a love for fashion. “I like everything, being versatile and having the ability to put on whatever I want to…it just works,” Jones said.

Celebrities, such as models, influencers, and artists are influences for students’ outfits. “I love Naomi Campbell, 90s supermodels, Diesel…I’ve been wearing a lot of denim at this time so definitely Diesel and my friends too.”

Zion Afolabi, a graphic design major, is inspired by the artist Nicki Minaj. “She had a white tank top, and you know Nicki Lewinsky, Nicki the Harajuku Barbie, so I kinda was feeling that look. I have bangs and I thought it would be cute to wear a hat with it. That was the fit; I just wanted something girly and fun, said Afolabi.

“I just went out there to show my face, be cute, meet a friend, and see more people. I will say I miss the old set where we were all kinda mingling together versus having people on stage and people watching them.”

The Set is a place where students can dress how they want to in their likeness.

As the semester goes on, Set Fridays will continue to be the place to be fashion-forward. It’s interesting to see how people’s styles differ from the next person. Anything from a person’s mood to a favorite supermodel can factor into picking an outfit out for Set Friday.
